Environmental Impact (page 61-67)
- Positive
- Environmental management
- Although globalisation bought an increase in environmental issues, it has also brought an increase in awareness of environmental management. More countries are aware that sustainable development is the key to further growth. If the environment is well-preserved, future generations can continue to use the resources to generate income so that they will be able to continue to enjoy high standards of living.
- One way to ensure a sustainable source of energy supply is through conservation. Alternative energy sources such as wind, solar and geothermal power can provide some of the energy needed. These sources account for a small proportion of world's energy needs as there are problems associated with the use of these alternative sources. The challenge is for countries to source alternative energy sources and find ways to generate power using sources that are available to them.
- Environmental management
- Negative
- Environmental degradation
- Deforestation and related problems
- This has caused many environmental problems such as soil erosion, extinction of flora and fuana (flowers and animals), increase in flooding as well as haze. Haze is caused by the practice of clearing land through 'slash-and-burn' agricultural practices. Haze during the dry period between June and October has been occurring in the Southern ASEAN region in the past few decades and can cause countries to incur heavy economic losses.
- Many rainforests in many countries have been cut down to make way for the development of industries, agriculture, housing and transportation. Some of the governments also allow trees to be cut down at a rapid rate as economic activities like forestry, mining, soybean cultivation and cattle ranching can generate revenue for the country.
- Global Warming
- Movement of goods has contributed to global warming as aeroplanes and ships produces large quantities of greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides. Factories and other different modes of transports around the world also emit an enormous quantity of fumes into the atmosphere everyday. The presence of these gases in the atmosphere thus leads to an increase in the average global temperature.
