Pediatric Medication Administration

1. Oral Medications

   • administer while the child is sitting upright with head elevated to prevent aspiration
   • administered with an oral plastic syringe

2. Parenteral Medications

   • SQ medications mostly given are insulin and some immunizations
   • SQ injection sites: lateral aspect of upper arm, abdomen, and central third of anterior thigh
   • IM injection site: vastus lateralis
   • Needle length & gauge for paeds: 1/2 - 1 inch and 22 - 25 gauge
