10.9 UMTS

10.9 UMTS

1. 3rd Generation = 3G

   • Higher rates of transmission & richer range of services
     • Introduces new radio technology into the NW

2. Universal Mobile Telecomms Systems

   • New 3G system

3. Principles of UMTS Security

   • Built on GSM
     • Adopt the security features from GSM that proved to be needed and are robust
     • Ensure compatability with GSM to ease inter-working and handover
     • Retained the Authentication features
     • Retained encryption but with new algorithms 128 bit keys
     • Kept the IMSI TMSI mechanism
   • Correct the problems of GSM by addressing any weakness
   • Add new Security Features
     • Secure new services
     • Address changes in NW architecture
     • Longer 128 bit key lengths
     • Security further back in the NW than GSM
     • Mutual authentication - Sim to NW / NW to SIM (remove false base station attack
     • Extra integrity protection of signalling data between phone and network
