  - Kept the IMSI TMSI mechanism
- Correct the problems of GSM by addressing any weakness
- Add new Security Features
  - Secure new services
  - Address changes in NW architecture
  - Longer 128 bit key lengths
  - Security further back in the NW than GSM
  - Mutual authentication - Sim to NW / NW to SIM (remove false base station attack
  - Extra integrity protection of signalling data between phone and network
