1. Motivation: some background thinking

   • The importance of motivation
     • Various studies have found that motivation is very strongly related to achievement in language learning (e.g. Gardner and Lamber, 1972)
   • Diferent kinds of motivation
     • Integrative & Instrumental
       • The desire to identify with and integrate into the target-language culture, contrated with the wish to learn the language for purposes of study or career promotion.
     • Global, tasks and situational
       • *Global: is the overall orientation of the learner towards the learning of the foreing language. *Situational: has to do with the context of learning. *Tasks: with the way the learner approaches the especific task in hand.
     • Intrinsic & extrinsic
       • *Intrinsic: the urge to engage in the learning sctivity for its own sake. *Extrinsic: motivation that is derived from external incentives.
   • Characteristics of motivated learners
     • *Positive task orientation *Ego-involved *Need for achievement *High aspirations *Goal orientation *Tolerance of ambiguity

2. The teacher's responsability

   • The teacher's function is seen mainly as a provider of materials and conditions for learning, while the learner takes resposability for his or her own motivation and performance.

   • The generalized desire to invest effort in the learning for its own sake.

   • Is that wich derives from the influence of some kind of esternal incentive, as distint from the wish to learn for its own sake or interest tasks.

5. Fluctuations in learner interest

   • How learner's level of attention and interest fluctuales within the period of egagement with a task, and what might cause such fluctuation.
