Objections to the concept of g

1. SOCIAL AND EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE

   • Limited evidence to support a distinction between the two
     • MSCEIT test items conflate questions about social situations with feelings people have in those situations
   • Predictive validity
     • Do scores predict achievement and success in real world?
       • Goleman’s book “Emotional Intelligence” contains no evidence for the extravagant claims (e.g., “nearly 90% of the difference between star performers at work and average ones is due to EI”)

2. No convincing evidence that tests of social or emotional intelligence are better predictors of success than IQ

3. Argument that IQ tests measure limited aspect(s) of intelligence (e.g., Sternberg, 1985) • Don’t capture ‘tacit knowledge’ or practical intelligence

4. IQ has a significant effect on skill acquisition and job performance
