If we think of the computer system as a layered model, the system software is the interface between the hardware and user applications. ... The OS manages all the other programs in a computer.
Time Slice
- The scheduler is run once every time slice to choose the next process to run. If the time slice is too short then the scheduler will consume too much processing time but if it is too long then processes may not be able to respond to external events quickly enough.
Multitasking
- Multitasking, in an operating system, is allowing a user to perform more than one computer task (such as the operation of an application program) at a time. The operating system is able to keep track of where you are in these tasks and go from one to the other without losing information.

Many drivers, such as the keyboard driver, come with the operating system. For other devices, you may need to load a new driver when you connect the device to your computer.
Operating System (OS)
- The operating system (OS) is the most important program that runs on a computer. Every general-purpose computer must have an operating system to run other programs and applications. ... For large systems, the operating system has even greater responsibilities and powers.
