DNS

DNS

1. Resolves hostnames

   • If your first DNS server doesn't know the answer then it forwards the query to its root DNS.

2. Resolves a fully qualified domain name (FQDN)

   • FQDN is a hierarchy that can logically locate a system based on its domain ID

3. IMPORTANT: If you can ping a device with an ip address but cannot use its FQDN, then you might have some type of DNS configuration failure.

4. Defines protocols and standards for text names throughout the world.

5. No single DNS knows all the names and matching IP addresses.

   • DNS servers of the world work together to find the right name.
