   • gas mains ruptures and water pipes fractured
   • sections of elevated roads collapsed
   • 1,000,000 homes had to cope without water for 10 days

3. Immediate Responses

   • people searched for people through the rubble
   • Hospitals struggled to cope with the injured
   • major retailers such as 7-eleven helped provide essentials
   • Motorola provided free phone calls

4. Long term responses

   • Buildings were re-built
   • People recovered from their injuries
   • water/gas pipes re-placed
   • Roads were re-built

5. Predict, protect and prepare

   • Buildings built further apart to avoid the domino effect in the future
   • High rise buildings were built with flexible steel frames
   • rubber blocks were put under bridges to absorb shocks
