Walden Chapter 13: House Warming
- Thoreau built a chimney in his house to
prepare for winter.
- He used bricks and sand for the
chimney and he plasters the walls to
keep the wind out.
- He gathers nuts and fruits (not to eat,
but more for decoration).
- Thoreau says that he dreams of having a
larger house to invite people to.
- But doesn't he believe that people have
too much possessions and only need the
essentials? (This goes against his beliefs).
- In society, people often have big houses to impress guests,
but end up staying as far away from them as possible and
calling it hospitality.
- He would rather be close to his guests and
interact with them rather than owning a big
house to impress them with.
