1. Memory

   • Describe the purpose of RAM in a computer system
     • To store programs and files currently being used by the computer system.
   • Describe the purpose of ROM in a computer system
     • Stores the boot program needed to start up the computer system.
   • State why virtual memory is needed
     • So that the user can run more programs if there is insufficient RAM.
   • Where is virtual memory is located in the computer system?
     • On the secondary storage
   • State 1 disadvantage of using virtual memory instead of increasing the amount of RAM
     • It is slower to access data because virtual memory is on the secondary storage.

   • State what is meant by secondary storage
     • Non volatile storage which can store data permanently.
   • state the three main common storage technologies
     • magnetic storage,Optical storage and solid state storage
   • State six characteristics of secondary storage devices.

   • State what is meant by Flash memory

   • State what is meant by a local area network (LAN).
     • Devices which are connected together over a small geographical area
   • Give 2 examples where you would find a LAN.

   • State what is meant by a wide area network (WAN).
     • Networks which are connected together over a large geographical area
   • What is the main example of a WAN?
     • The Internet

4. Systems security

   • State 2 threats which are more common with wide area networks (For example, web servers).
     • DDoS,SQL Injection
   • Describe the purpose of anti malware software.
     • Anti malware software is used to scan the computer system periodically for malware - it will remove/quarantine any malware it detects.
   • Describe the purpose of a firewall.
     • A firewall controls which programs can send and receive data packets so that only authorised users/ trusted programs can access the network.

5. Ethical, legal, cultural and environmental issues

   • State what is meant by a stakeholder
     • An individual or group of people with an interest in a particular decision.
   • State 5 stakeholders for a local business
     • Business owners / shareholders, Employees, Suppliers, Local community, Copyright owners, Government
   • Describe what is meant by "open source" software
     • Software which is distributed with the source code which can be viewed and modified.
