Group Displays

Group Displays

1. Group displays are ritualised displays of aggression between groups of people which serves the function of determining dominance hierarchies in relation to ownership of territory and intimidation towards other groups.

   • Group displays serve to mark out and defend territory e.g . football team supporters congregating in traditional areas and violently resisting attempts opposing fans to occupy the same territory.
   • Aggressive behaviour between rival sports fans is ritualistic where lots of posturing and verbal abuse occurs but little actual violence suggesting it's a symbolic show of strength designed to limit injury.

2. Warefare AO1: War is for survival, resource ownership and to increase reproductive success. The formation of coalition to attack others within the same species. Though there is a risk to individuals, it is reduced by aggressive group displays. War allows one group status over another giving them access to their resources and women.

3. Sport AO1: Sport is competitive and often involves traits such as strength and skills and allows competition between males. These traits are seen to be attractive to females. Females select winning males for reproductive success based on the displays of genetic fitness they see. Territory is highly valued (one team takes another's ground). Victory brings even more reflected glory and increased status to the supporters.
