How Do We Assess EB/EL Students?
Authentic Assessments = Direct Measurements
- AA allows students opportunities to apply what they have learned in authentic or real-life situations. Greater transfer of learning from one setting (classroom) to another (generalization)
- Through AA, EB/EL can demonstrate the mastery of academic materials through "doing" rather than recalling or answering questions. EB/ELs can truly demonstrate their true knowledge and skills by performing and applying what they have learned.
Assessing the L1
- First-language literacy skills facilitate second or foreign language acquisition. Family literacy can enhance academic success.
- EB/ELs can read and complete story maps, graphic organizers, etc. in their primary language. They can produce written work and have their parents, with their primary language, assess their child's work.
Informal Assessments
- Allow teachers to track student learning continuously and allow opportunity for teachers to modify their instruction.
- Standardized testing do not reflect the true knowledge and skills of EB/ELs. Rather, they measure the student's ability to answer or recall information. Informal assessments allow opportunity for progress monitoring that result in records for the placement of students and grading.
Performance-Based Assessment
- Students perform meaningful tasks - they apply their content knowledge to real-life situations.
- EB/ELs can perform their knoweldge rather than recalling or selecting choices. Some activities that they can do include oral retelling, reading with a partner, roleplaying, etc. Teachers can use an oral scoring rubric to evaluate student's performance.
Portfolio Assessment
- Allows opportunity for students to be involved in evaluating their learning and performance throughout the year as well as throughout their school years.
- Collect work samples such as writings, drawings, and teacher evaluations. EB/ELs, with established guidelines, can sleect their own work samples to be included in the portfolio.
