1. The three most common operating systems for personal computers are Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS X, and Linux.

   • Linux is a Unix-like and mostly POSIX-compliant computer operating system assembled under the model of free and open-source software development

2. Most of the time, there are many different computer programs running at the same time, and they all need to access your computer's central processing unit (CPU), memory, and storage.

   • The central processing unit (CPU), also called a processor, is located inside the computer case on the motherboard.
   • RAM is your system's short-term memory
   • Storage is one which stores program instructions in electronic memory

3. Modern operating systems use a graphical user interface, or GUI (pronounced gooey).

   • Without an operating system, a computer is useless.

4. The operating systems we've been talking about were designed to run on desktop or laptop computers.
