IDEs

  1. We write high-level code by writing the code as plain text, then either compiling it or running it with an interpreter.

  2. The job is made much easier by using an Integrated Development Environment (IDE)

  3. IDEs are text editors with extra features designed to make programming easier. these can include: Built-in compiler or interpreter Linker, Loader, Debugger, Trace, Break Points, Variable Watch, Memory Inspector and Error Diagnostics .

  4. IDEs will include the facility to load multiple source files and link them together.

  5. If your code has logic error, it can be hard to track down. A debugger is a way to help this. The debugger steps through the code line by line allowing the programmer to view how the code executes and spot if the wrong line is running.

  6. Another debugging tool is tracing. its a log of what happens while a program is running, including logs of: Which variables have been changed, User inputs and Loops.

  7. Advanced IDEs will keep a table of variables that are used by the program.

  8. Break-points are used in conjunction with the other de-bugging tools. A break point is inserted at a particular point in the code. When this code is reached, the execution pauses, and the programmer can inspect the contents of variables to see if they are as expected.

  9. When the compiler has an error, IDEs will deal with this error by highlighting the code that caused it. If a runtime error occurs.

  10. Some IDEs will include a memory inspector. This allows the programmer to view the contents of memory locations as the program runs, to help spot errors.

  11. A good IDE makes programming easier and it helps the user fix errors. Syntax and runtime errors are stopped and the cause of the error highlighted. Logic errors can be easier to locate by using break points and variable watch along with other debugging tools.

  12. IDEs will allow you to compile and run the application directly from the IDE interface. In IDLE, F5 is pressed to run the built-in interpreter In Greenfoot, we click the compile button to compile the code.
