MUSCULAR SYSTEM - PAGES 76-77
- ANTAGONISTIC PAIRS
- skeletal muscles work together to provide movement of the joints.
- whilst one muscle contracts, other relaxes to create movement.
- Muscles working together like this ^ are called antagonistic pairs .. lol pears
- REMEMBER THIS PLZ!! - muscles are connected to bones by tendons.
- When muscles contract they pull on the tendon which pull on the bone. This creates MOVEMENT.
- Relaxing muscle = ANTAGONIST.
- BICEPS AND TRICEPS
- BICEPS
- front of upper arm.
- ROLE= flexion of arm @ elbow
- EG - upwards phase of a bicep curl
- During this movement the triceps is the ANTAGONIS - relaxes to allow biceps to contract
- TRICEPS
- Back of upper arm
- ROLE= extension of arm @ elbow
- EG - straightening the arms in a chest press.
- bicep is antagonist - relaxes to let the triceps to contract
- QUADRICEPS AND HAMSTRINGS
- QUADRICEPS
- front of upper leg.
- ROLE = extension of leg at knee
- EG - straightening the leading leg going over a hurdle
- HAMSTRING
- Back of upper leg
- ROLE = flexion of upper leg at knee
- EG - bending the trailing leg going over a hurdle
- Skeletal muscles move the point at joints. words 2 use are :
- flexion and extension
