Perspective and its Changes

  1. To Kill a Mockingbird

    • Scout
      • BEGINNING : Child innocence
        • "Dill concluded by saying he would love me forever...he would come get me and marry me..." (Lee 154).
      • ENDING : Loss of child innocence; maturity
        • "I would lead him through our house, but I would never lead him home" (Lee 372).
          • "After all, if Aunty could be a lady at a time like this, so could I" (Lee 318). (Tom being dead).
      • The Neighborhood
        • Scout views the neighborhood differently at the beginning than in the end, and recounts the seasons and events that occurred from Boo's perspective.
          • "I had never seen our neighborhood from this angle...Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them" (Lee 372-374).
          • "Just standing on the Radley porch was enough" (Lee 274).
    • Atticus
      • Urged Jem and Scout to see others' perspectives.
        • "You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view...until you climb into his skin and walk around in it" (Lee 39).
      • **CREATES EMPATHY**
        • Also follows his beliefs and takes the court case, testing his moral courage, defending Tom Robinson, a black man. Atticus sees past the color of Tom's skin and does the morally just thing.
          • "'Simply because we were licked a hundred years before we started is no reason for us not to try to win,'" (Lee 101).
        • Treats Cal with respect!
    • Jem
      • Exhibits maturity early on, inviting a Cunningham to dinner.
        • "'Come on home to dinner with us, Walter'" (Lee 25).
  2. American History

    • Jim Crowe Laws
      • Enforced racial segregation between blacks and whites; "Separate but equal".
    • Rosa Parks
      • Did not give up her seat on the bus, and was arrested.
    • Montgomery Bus Boycott
      • Sparked by Rosa Parks, ninety percent of blacks did not ride busses, demonstrated "civil disobedience".
    • All of the following events were key parts in the Civil Rights Movement, which eventually allowed equality and voting rights to all black citizens. Before this time, people were not equal.
      • Today, all people are considered "equal".
  3. The Great Debaters

    • BEGINNING : No one believed a black school debate team would ever compete against a debate against a white school, let alone beat Harvard. Black colleges were seen to debate strictly against black colleges, and vice versa.
      • Segregation; inequality; lesser.
    • ENDING : People appreciated black schools debating against white schools and saw the potential and intellectual abilities in black people, who were often regarded as "dumber" than others.
      • Exhibited racial tolerance; step towards diminishing segregation between people.
