- Tracks changes to content Provides central point for collaboration Centralized administration: Teams have controlled access scope. The main branch should always correspond to deployable code. IBM Cloud is built around open-source tools including git repos.
- Commands
- INIT: When starting a new repository you can create one in github or copy one with this command. ADD: moves changes from a working directory to your staging area. Example: If you are working 3 files and you are just happy with one you can add only that one to be commited. STATUS: allows you to see the state of your working directory and the state snapshot of your changes COMMIT: takes your states snapshot of changes to the files added and commit them to your project. code: git commit - m 'commit message'/ "to combine add all files and commit use" git commit -am 'message'
- RESET: Undoes changes that you made to your files in your working directory. code: git reset (back to last commit) git reset --hard (all files back to the selected commit> git reset --hard origin/nameofthebranch (back to the last commit in the origin) LOG: Enables you to browse previous changes in your project and watch the commit messages from the different commits. BRANCH:Create an isolated enviroment to make changes CHECKOUT: See and change existing branches. code: git checkout -b nameofnewbranch (to create a new branch) git checkout nameofbranch (to jump to an already existing branch)MERGE: Merge everything again.
- PUSH: Push the commited changes to your Repository in github, if not owned they will create a pull request. PULL: If you want to bring the version of the repository to your computer then you can use pull to do it.
GITHUB
- Source Depository Is an online hosting service for git repositories Hosted by subsidiary of microsoft Offers free, proffesional and enterprise accounts.
- What is a Repository? A data structure for storing documents including app source code. A repository can track and maintain version control.
- Branches
- They are created as a copy of the master branch where the only deployable code will be located. You make commit changes in here and when you think you have a stable code you make a pull request to integrate this branch into the main one
- After making the pull request, someone will review it and approve it, after that the final step will be merging the branches and deleting the child branch where the changes where developed.
- Pages
- You can easily deploy your website from GITHUB so anybody can see it, also as you change it your page will change as well.
GITLAB
- Is a DevOps platform, delivered as a single app. Provides access to git repositories Provides source code management
- Enables devs to collaborate, work from a local copy, branch and merge code, streamline testing and delivery with CI/CD.
