Integrated Development Environment

1. Translators

   • Compilers
     • Translates the code in one piece, outputting at the end. Its faster, but you only see the errors at the end.
   • Interpreter
     • Translates the code line by line, outputting as it goes. Slower, but you see the errors after each bit of code has been translated.
   • Translators are used to convert high level code into low level code that can be understood by computers, and vice versa.
   • Assembler
     • Converts assembly code (mneomiccs) into low-level code (machine code).

2. High level code and Low level code

   • High level code is close to natural language - the spoken and written language of humans (e.g. Python).
   • Low-level languages are languages that sit close to the computer's instruction set. The two types are assembly code (e.g. mnemonics), and machine code(e.g. binary).

3. Tools

   • Source Code Editor: Organises the code such as indents, colour coding, bracket matching, syntax check.
   • Error Diagnostics and Debugger: Warnings identify problems in the code and list errors.
   • Run-Time Environment: Allows developer to run the code during development. Allow time to check errors and functionality.
   • Translator: Compiles or Interprets the source code into runnable machine code.
