ISA- section 2

  1. Key words

    • precision- when the measurements are ALL close to the mean value-no relation to true value
    • resolution- the smallest change in the quantity being measured
    • accuracy- how close something is to the true value
    • Random errors- errors caused by things we cant control
    • systematic errors- errors caused by faulty equipment
    • reliable- a result that constantly stays the same after several repeats
    • repeatable- if the original experimenter with same equipment gets the same results
    • reproducible- if another person with different equipment or techniques gets the same results
    • independent variable- the one your changing
    • dependent variable- the one your measuring
    • a fair test- when only the independent variable has been allowed to affect the dependent variable
    • validity- your results are only valid if you have carried out a fair test
    • control variable- the ones you keep the same
    • continuous variable- can have any numerical value
    • categoric variable- are described in labels
  2. comparing results with other people

    • similar pattern
    • if the same pattern or trend accurs the results are reproducible
    • check results
    • anomalies
    • variables
  3. hypothesis

    • does the hypothesis support the results?
    • what does the results look like
    • pattern?
    • EXAMPLES
  4. Errors

    • what went wrong?
    • how could you make it better?
    • measuring cylinder
    • zero error
    • systematic error (environment)
    • human error
    • more repeats
  5. anomalous results

    • doesn't fit the pattern
    • label it
    • say why its an AR
    • Exampes
  6. case studies

    • mention all case studies
    • give examples
    • pattern
