Digital Impacts

  1. REST

    • Separation of Client and Server
      • In the REST architectural style, the implementation of the client and the implementation of the server can be done independently without each knowing about the other. This means that the code on the client side can be changed at any time without affecting the operation of the server, and the code on the server side can be changed without affecting the operation of the client.
    • Statelessness
      • Systems that follow the REST paradigm are stateless, meaning that the server does not need to know anything about what state the client is in and vice versa. In this way, both the server and the client can understand any message received, even without seeing previous messages.
    • Communication between Client and Server
      • In the REST architecture, clients send requests to retrieve or modify resources, and servers send responses to these requests.
    • Making Requests
      • REST requires that a client make a request to the server in order to retrieve or modify data on the server. A request generally consists of: • an HTTP verb, which defines what kind of operation to perform • a header, which allows the client to pass along information about the request • a path to a resource • an optional message body containing data
    • HTTP
      • Verbs
        • • GET — retrieve a specific resource (by id) or a collection of resources
        • • POST — create a new resource
        • • PUT — update a specific resource (by id)
        • • DELETE — remove a specific resource by id
      • Response Codes

  2. JSON

    • JSON (JavaScript Object Notation) is a lightweight data-interchange format. It is easy for humans to read and write. It is easy for machines to parse and generate.
      • JSON is built on two structures: A collection of name/value pairs. In various languages, this is realized as an object, record, struct, dictionary, hash table, keyed list, or associative array. An ordered list of values. In most languages, this is realized as an array, vector, list, or sequence.
        • Syntax: { "key1":"value1", "key3":"value3", "key3":"value3", .....}
  3. XML

    • The Extensible Markup Language (XML) is a simple text-based format for representing structured information: documents, data, configuration, books, transactions, invoices, and much more. XML is one of the most widely-used formats for sharing structured information today: between programs, between people, between computers and people, both locally and across networks.
      • Syntax: <dataset> <record> <key1>value1</key1> <key2>value2</key2> </record> </dataset>
  4. SOAP

    • Simple Object Access Protocol
      • SOAP is a standard protocol that was first designed so that applications built with different languages and on different platforms could communicate.
        • Web Service Specifications
          • Web services security (WS-security): Standardizes how messages are secured and transferred through unique identifiers called tokens.
          • WS-ReliableMessaging: Standardizes error handling between messages transferred across unreliable IT infrastructure.
          • Web services addressing (WS-addressing): Packages routing information as metadata within SOAP headers, instead of maintaining such information deeper within the network.
          • Web services description language (WSDL): Describes what a web service does, and where that service begins and ends.
  5. Messaging

  6. GraphQL

    • GraphQL is a query language and is increasingly seen as a more efficient, flexible and powerful way of working with APIs than REST.
  7. SQL

    • Structured Query Language (SQL) is a programming language that is used to create databases and tables to store information digitally.
      • Basic Syntax
        • SELECT column1, column2, ... FROM table_name;
  8. Python

    • Python is a programming language used for various things including web development and software development.
      • Syntax
        • >>> print("Hello, World!") Hello, World!
  9. HTML

    • Programming used to layout and decorate a web application
    • Syntax
      • <html><body>*content*</body></html>
  10. CSS

    • Syntax
      • identifier { background-colour: black; }
