Addaptive Organization: one that automatically adjust its process and performance to currecnt conditions
- Addaptive processes force you to slow down and invest in preventing the kinds of problems that are currently wasting time
- As those preventive efforts pay off, you naturally speed up again
- Building an adaptive organization requieres executive leadership to sponsor and support the process
- Addaptive processes force you to slow down and invest in preventing the kinds of problems that are currently wasting time
To work, Startups require built-in speed regulators that help teams find their optimal pace of work
- An example of speed regulation is the use of andon cord, it'skey is that it brings work to a stop as soon as an uncorrectable quality problem surfaces
The 5 Whys System... To make incremental investments and evolve a startup processes gradually.
- The core idea is to te investments directly to the prevention of the most problematic symptoms
- This technique was developed as a systematic problem- solving tool by Taiichi Ohno (The father of the Toyota production system)
- By asking and answering "WHY" 5 times, we can get to the real cause of the problem
- Acts as a natural speed regulator, and ties the rate progress to learning, not just execution.
Proportional Investment: the investment should be smaller when the symptom is minor and larger when the symptom is more painful
The 5 Blames: instead of asking why repeatedly in an attempt to understand what went wrong, teammates start pointing fingers at each othe, trying to decided who is at fault
- Tactics for scaping the 5 Blames:
Tip's of how to get started with the 5 Whys system: 1. enviroment of mutual trust and empowerment. 2. Be tolerant of all mistakes the first time. 3. Never allow to the same mistake to be made twice
- Give the team the chance to learn how ti do the process first and then expand into higher stakes areas later.
- It's helpful to apoint a 5Whys master who is tasked with being the moderator in meetings
- 5 Whys sessions: 1. Sessions are necessary as new problems come up. 2. Everyone who is conected to a problem needs to be at the sessions. 3. At the begining of each sessions, take a few minutes to explain what the process is for, how it works, and the beneffits
