1. File management

   • ensure access control mechanisms are maintained
     • Access to file , password protection
   • specifying the logical file storage format
     • FAT, NTFS
   • ensure memory allocation for a file
     • Reading form HDD/SSD

2. Hardware Management

   • communicating with all input and output devices
   • translating data from a file into a format that the input/output device can understand
   • ensuring each hardware resource has a priority

3. Process Management

   • allowing all processes to be fully synchronized
   • scheduling and conflict resolution of same resources

4. Security Management

   • maintaining access rights for all users
   • offering the ability for the recovery of data and system restore when it has been lost or corrupted
   • helping to prevent illegal intrusion to the computer

5. Memory Management

   • Memory optimisation
     • determine how computer memory is allocated and de- allocated when number of applications are running simultaneously.
     • determines where they are stored in memory.
     • Swap data from and to HDD or SSD
     • Keep track of all allocated memory and free memory available for use by applications
   • Memory organisation
     • Used to determine how much computer memory is allocated to an application.
     • determines how the memory can be split up in the most appropriate manner
   • Memory protection
     • Prevent data lost
