Text based story game

  1. prescribed criteria

    • Must have ten different variables
      • Each variable must be different
        • not choice_1 or choice_2, it should be; job_searching, Escape_descision
    • must have at least two choices for each input
      • Input is an opportunity for the player to add a response to the story
      • The responses in user input should lead to different outcomes
    • must use a WHILE Loop
      • Gave must have minimum of one while loop
      • Must run the code of the game until the condition is met
    • must use variables that match your storyline
      • Must use variables which names must match story line
      • Written using correct pseudocode naming conventions
  2. existing text based adventure games

    • Hitchhikers guide to the galaxy
      • The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy by Douglas Adams is a comic science fiction story about Arthur Dent, an ordinary Englishman who escapes the demolition of Earth and travels across an absurd universe.
        • Strengths: The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy excels in its brilliant satirical humor, boundless imagination, and sharp wit. Douglas Adams perfectly uses absurd cosmic concepts—like Marvin the Paranoid Android and the number 42—to mock human bureaucracy and existential anxieties, creating an enduring comedic masterpiece.
        • Weaknesses: The novel suffers from an episodic, fragmented structure with very little traditional plot driving it forward. Characters function as comedic archetypes rather than developing emotionally, which can make the pacing meander and the ending feel abrupt for readers seeking a cohesive story.
    • Forests of Lyirca
      • The Forest of Lyrica is a mythical, enchanted woodland prominent in fantasy fiction and tabletop roleplaying games like Dungeons & Dragons. It is most famous for its vibrant, magical flora and fauna, often acting as a sanctuary for fey creatures, elves, and ancient spirits.
        • Stengths: core strengths is its nostalgic, old-school design that heavily focuses on atmosphere and interactive storytelling, allowing players to engage deeply with textual descriptions to navigate an adventurous fantasy world. It is incredibly accessible, launching seamlessly in any web browser without the need for high-end gaming hardware or lengthy installations.
        • Weaknesses: it lacks modern 3D graphics, animations, or sound effects, which may alienate mainstream players who prefer highly visual and fast-paced gameplay. Additionally, due to its minimalist design and limited scale as a compact indie project, it offers lower replayability once the main adventure paths and text puzzles are completed.
  3. algorithm constructs

    • sequence
      • Sequence is where instructions are executed sequentially, one after another, in the exact order they are written
        • OUTPUT "Enter length: " INPUT length OUTPUT "Enter width: " INPUT width
    • assignment
      • Assignment is a fundamental construct used to store or update a value in a computer's memory by associating it with a specific variable name
        • INPUT StudentName INPUT Score Status <- "Pending"
    • iteration
      • Iteration in algorithm constructs is the process of repeating a specific block of code a set number of times or until a specific condition is met
        • WHILE fuel_level > 0 DO RUN engine() fuel_level = fuel_level - 1 END WHILE
    • selection
      • Selection is a fundamental algorithm construct where the system makes a decision and chooses a specific path of execution based on whether a given condition evaluates to true or false
        • IF score >= 50 THEN PRINT "Pass" ELSE PRINT "Fail" END IF
    • Condition
      • condition is a boolean expression or decision-making element within an algorithm that evaluates to either true or false
        • IF score >= 50 THEN PRINT "Pass" ELSE PRINT "Fail" END IF
  4. self determined criteria

    • Add ascii images
      • images must be related to story/scene
        • For example; if current scene is at a restaurant the image must be related
    • acii colours
      • color should match the expected colour scheme of the setting and time of the related story
        • Exampl; most common colours in medivel times for clothes were green, orange browns, blues and yellows
  5. ideas for story

    • Lowly peasent aims to climb to the top
      • A peasent is looking for jobs and has to make a series of choices that will help him successfully climb to the top securing luxury, a title and status
        • Do you apply for the chef job? apply/keep searching
    • Escape of doom
      • A knight is lost trying to find his kingdom after battling a dragon by the queens command. He has limited supplies and needs to get back as fast as he can to claim his glory
        • You are desrerted in the desert, do you scavenge for food or keep trying to find a way to get out? scavenge/escaping
  6. Programming elements

    • variables
      • In Python, a variable is a symbolic name that acts as a label or reference to an object stored in the computer's memory
        • user_age = 25 user_name = "Alice" print(user_age) = 25 print(user_name) = Alice
    • if, else
      • if and else statements are conditional statements used for decision-making in Python. They allow your program to execute different blocks of code depending on whether a given condition evaluates to True or False
        • Example; if colour sensor detects black move right, else move left
    • elif
      • The elif keyword in Python stands for "else if". It lets you check multiple alternative conditions in sequence if the initial if statement evaluates to False
        • score = 85 if score >= 90: print("Grade: A") elif score >= 80: print("Grade: B") elif score >= 70: print("Grade: C") else: print("Grade: F")
    • While loop
      • A while loop in Python repeatedly executes a block of code as long as a specific condition remains true. Unlike a for loop, which iterates over a fixed sequence, a while loop is primarily used when you do not know upfront how many times the code needs to run.
        • count = 1 while count <= 5: print(f"The count is: {count}") count += 1 print("Loop finished!")
    • for loop
      • A Python for loop repeats a block of code for each item in a sequence or collection (such as a list, tuple, string, or range)
        • for item in sequence:
    • Arrays
      • An array is a fundamental data structure in programming used to store a fixed-size, sequential collection of elements of the same data type under a single variable name.
