MULTI-STORE MODEL- ATKINSON AND SHRIFFIN
SENSORY MEMORY
- Information is stored here from the senses.
- Anything that is perceived (seen, heard, smelt etc)
SHORT TERM MEMORY
- Information is sent here if paid attention to from the sensory memory
- Things are forgotten when displaced my new information
- This information is stored acoustically
- Capacity is 7+/- 2 items
- Duration- 15 second
- Information is sent here if paid attention to from the sensory memory
LONG TERM MEMORY
- Semantic enconding
- Unlimited duration and capacity
- Information is stored here after elaborative rehearsal
- When information is retrieved it is put back into the stm
EVALUATION
- Simplistic- doesn't explain the mechanism in how the stm and ltm work together
- The LTM store doesn't explain episodic memory, procedural memory or semantic and how they may be stored within the ltm
- This model has influenced more research into memory.
- High face validity
- Studies have high validity
EVIDENCE
- HM- suffered from server epilepsy and underwent brain surgery to remove part of his temporal lobes. The operation alleviated the epilepsy but left him with severe memory problems. His IQ stayed the same. He could recall early life events but not those 10 years before the surgery. Showing that the LTM and STM are separate stores
- GLANZER CUNITZ- gave participants a list of words of which they were then asked to recall. In condition one the were asked to recall straight away, condition two the were given the distracter task to count back in 3s. In the first condition people could remember the first and last words in the list, in condition two people cold only remember the first few words. This evidence (the prmacy and recency effect) suggests that memory is composed of different, separate stored
- BROWN AND KULIK- Flash bulb memory. People that experiences traumatic events store their memory into the long term memory store without rehearsal.
