- data
- data are letters, characters, numbers, symbols, images, lights and sounds before they have been processed by a computer or other processor.
- B
- structure
- when data is presented in a particular way, it gains structure.
- context
- numbers and letters that are presented in a way could still be interpreted in different ways. therefore they need to be put in to context.
- meaning
- once meaning is added to data, it becomes information which will then be useful.
- data + meaning = information
- C
- text
- advantage explanations can be given text can be read even if it's noisy
- disadvantage language barriers cold be difficult to explain something without an image it could take a long time for a person to process the text.
- picture
- advantage pictures can be seen and understood without any language barrier and could be seen if noisy
- disadvantage images on their own cannot give explanations or Instructions some images can confuse some people with their meaning
- LED
- advantage takes up very little space cheap to produce and little power needed
- disadvantages on their own don't mean anything and so text or images are needed can only be seen if someone is closeup
- videos
- advantages videos can include both sound and video meaning that explanations can be given can explain exactly how something works
- disadvantages requires display screen time consuming to produce difficult to hear in a noisey environment not helpful for blind or deaf people
- animation
- disadvantage animation doesn't include sound and some information could be missed out
- advantages a person could understand specific language
- sound
- advantages sound can grab people's attraction doesn't need a display can be used for blind people
- disadvantages deaf people won't be able to hear it could be difficult to hear in noisy environment
- D
- knowledge is about understanding what information means and being able to apply it to a situation. a cars speedometer may display 45 mph so it tells you the car is traveling at that speed.
- E
- string
- a string of data is a set or lists letters symbols characters and or numbers.
- integer
- first number of the data types integer are whole numbers
- real
- numbers that include a decimal place
- date time
- any dates and times can be stored using date and time
- boolean
- data can only be one or two values these values are true and false or yes and on ...
- F
- direct scoure of data
- data has been collected and used for the same purpose for which was collected
- indirect scoure of data
- data has been collected from an indirect scoure when used for a different purpose it was collected for
- G
- static
- static data doesn't change and is permanently there
- dynamic
- dynamic data can be changed it is stored in an electronic format like the internet
- H
- garbage in = garbage out
- the quality of information all depends upon how good the quality of the data is.
- accuracy
- accurate data must be correct there are validation errors including wrong spelling
- relevance
- information must be relevant for the purpose it's being used for.
- age
- data must be up to data for the purpose it's being used for. most data could go out of data very quickly.
- completeness
- it is important that all the data required is avaliable some data may be accidentally missed out.
- presentation
- a lot of the information provided can be present, accurate, up to date and relevant. but may be presented in ina bad so is difficult to understand.
- level of detail
- tell level for detail within the information of relevance and completeness. if the information is too detailed then there will be a lot of irrelevant information however if their is too little detail then there could be too little
- I
- encoding methods
- numeral representation that is when words and descriptions are replaced by numbers.
- abbreviations this involves explaining words and disruptions with letters that are related to those words
- value judgements these are used in questionnaires when a respondent is asked what they think about about a particular thing.
- advantage
- low storage usage
- processing speed increased
- data can be kept confidential
- disadvantage
- accuracy
- completeness
- interpretation
- limited codes
- J
- range check
- ensure date is with in the acceptable range
- type check
- check the data is correct
- length check
- check the data is within the word length
- picture/format check
- matches the particular pattern
- presence check
- checks that data has been entered to a particular field
- lookup in list
- check the list of data exists
- check digit
