1. WHAT IS A VIRUS? This is a program which infects computer systems by self-replicationg (copying itself on to other systems.

   • PC's can be infected by viruses when the data is introduced by: removable device or across a Netowork
   • INFECTION BY VIRUS: Can cause harm to PC OR collect information from PC

2. BOOT SECOTR VIRUS: Spread by hiding itself in the boot sector of a hard drive

3. EMAIL VIRUS: Contains attachment within email, when opened this replicates itself automatically on the PC.

4. TROJAN: This is a computer program. Only damages what is on the PC when run.

   • APPEARS TO BE FRIENDLY BUT ISN'T!

5. VIRUS PROTECTION: Install anti-virus software on all PC's. This scans storage to display any infections int he PC.

   • Install the protection on to the network. This regulary needs updates

6. MACRO VIRUS: Many apps now have built in programming language. The virus infects word processors, spreadsheets and databases.

7. AUDIT LOGS: Consist of data about each stage of any transaction or logs. This can track who did what? At which work station? and when it occurred?!

8. FIREWALL: This stands between the network and the outside world! Can be hardware or software based.

   • This uses a set of rules. Access is denied if does not comply with the rules.

9. WHY USE A FIREWALL? This prevents enternal users from gaining unauthorised access to PC. This limits and filters dataentry.

   • Can also block certain types of data. To Comply with the Data Protection Act! Also stops hackers and viruses from entering the system.
