1. A single user operating system

   • designed for use by one person at a time eg a PC

2. A multi-operating system

   • a number of users can use the system at the same time

3. multi tasking systems

   • a number of users applications can run simultaneously eg a windows environment
     • main features:- an interactive user can control a number of different tasks simutaneously with ne task running in the foreground and others on the background
