Storage Box
- Materials and components
- Woods
- Hard woods
- Hardwoods are very hard easy to
maintain. they have an elegant finish
and there are many types to choose
from.
- Hardwoods
are very
expensive
because they
take along time
to grow aInd
also can be
hard to work
with.
- Soft woods
- Soft woods are cheap in comparison to
hardwoods And they are relatively easy to
work with and it is lighter than hardwoods.
- Softwoods are not
very strong and are
easily broken and
damaged so are not
good for furniture.
- Manufactured woods
- This wood can
be weak and
very difficult to
work with, tools
are easily
blunted and also
boards are
difficult to join.
- Using manufactured Wood uses up
waste products that would otherwise
have no use.
- Plastics
- Thermosetting Plastics
- Can be coloured and have good resistance
to water. They have a high surface hardness
and arev hard.
- They are quite brittle
and also once heated
and formed once they
stay in that shape and
cannot be reformed
- Thermo plastics
- Thermo plastics can be reheated and reformed over and
over again, they are light weight, coloured and most can be
recycled.
- They can be
expensive and
at times are
expensive to
recycle. Some
scratch easily
and can give of
dangerous
fumes.
- Function
- To securly hold
any valuables
placed in it. It
should be
suitable for a
desk/bedroom
area and be
astheically
pleasing.
- The storage
box should
safely and
securly hold any
items so that
they will not be
lost or
damaged.
- Also the box itself should be very durable and be able to with
stand minor abuse. The materials it is constructed from should
be strong and durable.
- Form
- The shape of the
product should be
crafted around the
performance
requirements and
what the storage
container is actually
going to hold.
- All edges of the product should be
curved/rounded so as the user cannot be
hurt. Also these curved edges are more
aesthetically pleasing.
- The product should be of a suitable
design for a teenagers bedroom and
blend in with the surroundings e.g pencil
case, books, phone, iPod ect.
- Performance Requirements
- Any openings or doors should
open smoothly without sticking or
shifting out of the correct position.
- The product should be light weight and able to be moved from place to place
- The
product
should be
able to be
locked if the
owner so
wishes.
- User Requirements
- It needs to provide efficent storage for valuables of a
typical teenager. It should be big enough to store things
but small enough for a desk.
- There should be easy access to where the contents
is stored and the items that it is designed to hold
should fit neatly in.
- Sustainabillity
- The unseen parts of the final product should be made from materials such
as manufactured woods or soft woods but for aesthetic reasons I wish to
use hard woods for the exterior. Any plastic will be able to be recycled
when finished with.
- Where possible the materials used in the making
of the product will be, recyclable or recycled
materials e.g thermoplastics and mamanufactured
woods.
