Arguments for existence of God

1. COSMOLOGICAL

   • argument that everything must have been started off
     • 'caused' by something else
       • causation
   • Cause and effect
   • everything that happens (effect) must have had something that made it happen (cause)
   • nothing happens by itself. everything needs a cause.
     • Therefore the universe must have a cause
       • Only God could have caused the universe to come about.
         • Therefore there must be a God.

2. TELEOLOGICAL

   • design
     • Idea things with a function or purpose must have been created for that purpose.
   • WILLIAM PALEY
     • philosopher
       • watch theory
         • everything needs a designer
     • to design something takes intelligence and thought
       • universe shows evidence of design (DNA)
         • Therefore a Being with intelligence/thought must have designed it
           • Only God could do this.
