1. The Smarter Planet is a corporate initiative of the information technology company IBM.

2. Smarter Cities

   • The majority of the population at 3.3 billion lived in a city and by 2050 it is expected that over 6.6 billion people will be living in cities.
   • 2.5 billion of energy waste in the UK by companies was produced by inefficient waste such as leaving lights and computers on.
   • Some of the types of cities which would benefit from becoming a smarter city are Green field cities and evolving cities.
     • A Green field city is when a city is built by designing the correct infrastructure and building it right first time which would be a smarter model of a city.
   • There is a smarter technology centre in Ireland which has been built for improving transport, communication, water and energy in cities around them and around the world.
     • This would help countries and cities around Ireland because they would have an easy way of communicating with each other and a quick way of moving around the city or country.

3. Smarter Traffic

   • The majority of people living in cities today will most likely move around by using a car. Also the products which are used we be delivered b trucks in the city.
   • To get smarter traffic into our cities, is to make sure you look at the relationship of the whole system of traffic flow which includes the environment and different companies in the city and the way that people work.
     • IBM are helping to put this situation into some of the cities around the world.
       • Cities such as Stockholm in Sweden are trying to make this happen because there is a dynamic traffic flow system which has reduced traffic by 20% and decrease time waiting in traffic by 25%.
       • Also in Singapore controllers receive real-time data through sensors which then go and predict traffic scenarios with a 90% accuracy rating.
       • Also in Kyoto in Japan city planners simulate large-scale traffic situations including millions of vehicles to find the impact on the urban environment.
