The Legal Framework
  1. Copyright
    1. PLAGIARISM: is when someone tries to pass off another person's work as their own. Its an issue that is magnified by the internet.
      1. There is so much information available on the Web, many people think that they can copy some of it and it'll go unnoticed.
        1. Copyright law forbids a person from: (a) giving a copy of the work to a friend (b) making a copy and selling it (c) renting the software without permission of copyright owner.
          1. Copyright gives the creators of some types of media rights to control how they're used and distributed for example, music, books, video and software can all be covered by copyright laws.
          2. Data Protection Act
            1. Was introduced in the UK in 1984.
              1. It gives rights to data subjects (people who have data about them stored on computer systems)
                1. Law requires that most organisations that plan to retain data register with the government.
                  1. It also entitles data subjects to see the personal data about them that's held by an organisation. If an organisation breaks the law, they can be fined and made to pay compensation to the data subject.
                  2. Computer Misuse Act
                    1. Prevents illegal access of files.
                      1. This law was introduced in 1990 to cope with the problems of computer hackers and viruses.
                        1. It prevents unauthorised access to computer materials (e.g. hacking). This inlaces viewing parts of a network you're not permitted to see, and the illegal copying of programs - software piracy.
