Separating Techniques
- Filtration
- Separates insoluble solid from a liquid/solution
- Residue is the insoluble solid
- Pour the solution and insoluble solid into the funnel with the filter paper
- The filtrate will pass through but the residue won't
- Fractional Distillation
- Separating liquids with different boiling points
- Take away potentially troublesome mixtures
- Then cool the gases
- And then heat them, separating the fractions out
- Seperating Funnel
- Separating immiscible liquids
- Less dense on top
- Open the tap at the bottom
- Close the tap when it is seperated
- Simple Distillation
- Separates solvent from a soluble solid
- Heat the solution
- The solvent will evaporate and condense back in the cool condenser
- This separates the mixtures
- Chromatography
- Separates solutes based on how soluble they are
- Draw line at the bottom with a dot of the solute
- Put the paper in the solvent below
- The more soluble ones will rise higher
