HA configuration and Processes:
HA States--Enabling HA cluster, will then elect a host to be master. All other hosts are slaves.
master:
Manges the protected list of VMs. Updates on power on and off.
Caches the cluster configuration. Notify and informs the slaves of configuration changes.
Send heartbeat to the slaves.
Reports state info to vCenter
slave:
Monitor local runtime of VMs. Changes report to Master.
Monitor health of the master/new election
Enables features from HA that dont require master.(VM health monitoring)
FT VS HA
Difference between the interruption to VMS in a failure
FT keeps a copy of the VM on another host
HA boots a dead hosts VM onto another host, HA will restart the VM on the same host if an OS failure occurs.
Seite 2
HA configuration
Admission control-
Advises the user of resource management with number of VMs to power and protect
VM options-
Adding VMs to Restart Priority is a failure some VMs are more critical
Isolation Response Hosts lose connection from the network, but have no failed. Power on/off vms?
VM monitoring-
Restarting a VM on application or OS failures
Datastore heartbeating-
PIng through esxi amgaement datastores

FT VS HA-
Differences + FT configuration
FT:
Using FastCheckpointing scale beyond 1 vCPU
enabling FT enables vMotion
Sync copies of hosts( mirror paity)
Vsphere Replication:
-Can copy VMs within/outside a cluster.
-Target or source can be within/outside the same Center.

VM Hardware:
motherboard-intel 440BX
Nics-E1000, E1000e, AMD PCnet
Buslogic parrallel SCSI, LSI SCSI, LSI SAS
MAX Specs
128 CPUS
4TB RAM
62TB Disks
10 Nics
Common Files
VMX-defines the hardware in the vm, processors/ram/nic/mac/etc
VMDK
Seite 5
VMWARE TOOLS PROS
optimized Nic,SCSI drivers
VM heartbeat
VSS support/Backups quiescing
Memory management
API access->PowerCLI to reach guest OS
Cloing a VM
faster way to provision
copies config files
no need to install guest OS
Guest customization
Ensure unquie ip, mac address, name, etc when cloning
Uses sysprep to create new name ip and sid
Temple
Clone to template
clone template to library
convert to template
OVF Template
Manifest File-- ends in .mf contain SHA-1 digests of the other files
OVF descriptor-- XML document that contains info about the OVF template such as product detail, hardware, requirements, licensing
VHD-- .vmdk: virtual hard disk ormates OVF support these files
OVA
distributed as a singple files either .ova or TAR. OVF is strict about the placement and order in the OVA.Easier to read, but easier to move around

VAPPs
multiple VMs into single unit
easier to manage in v Sphere
Cant Vapp in a cluster without DRS(balances loads)
create container+ configure, add to container by cloining/deploying template, or from scratch
VAPP ALLocation
On a prioity scale for resources to reserve which are shared across the VMs
VAPP IP allocations
Static-typed manual
Transient-uses ip pools that automatically assign
DHCP-dhcp server used to assign
CPU affinity-Statically associate a VM to a specific CPU Core
Draw backs
Prevent vmotion
No loadbalancing
cant use in a DRS cluster
memory CPU reservations once allocated can use used if the vm is idle or off
memory reservations are permanent
