Data Validation

Data validation is used to check whether data is reasonable, sensible and allowable.

Examples of Data validation checks are range checks, presence checks, Type checks and format checks.

Range checks make sure that the data entered is of the correct range for example if you wanted to check whether all people joining up a social media website were over thirteen you would have to make sure that the year of birth was below 2002.

Presence checks make sure that data is entered to a required field.

Type checks make sure that the data entered is the correct type for example the data entered for a date of birth was in numbers not letters.

Format checks are there to make sure the data is of the correct format. E.g. postcodes are LLNN NLL
