1. The septum: Divides the right and left chambers of the heart
2. Where are the valves located?: At the exit of each heart chamber
3. What do valves prevent?: Backward flow of blood
4. When do valves open?: When each chamber contracts
5. Where is the tricuspid valve?: At the exit of the right atrium
6. Where is the pulmonary valve?: At the exit of the right ventricle
7. Bicuspid (mitral) valve: At the exit of the left atrium
8. Aortic valve: at the exit of the left ventricle
9. What directions do veins carry blood?: Towards the heart
10. What direction do arteries carry blood?: Away from the heart
11. What type of blood do veins carry?: Deoxygenated blood
12. Which side of the heart do veins carry blood?: The right
13. Superior vena cava: Collects blood from the upper alf of body and directs it into the right atrium
13. Inferior vena cava: Collects blood from the lower half of body and directs it into the right atrium
14. Pulmonary veins: Carry the oxygenated blood from the lungs into the left atrium of the heart
15. Pulmonary artery: Carries deoxygenated blood from the heart to the lungs
16. Aorta: The large arterial trunk carries blood from the heart to be distributed by branch arteries through the body.
17. 4 chambers of the heart: Right atrium, left atrium, right ventricle, left ventricle
18. Systole: Contraction of the heart
19. Diastole: Relaxation of the heart
20. Path of blood flow:
Superior/Inferior vena cava
right atrium
tricuspid valve
right ventricle
pulmonary valve
pulmonary artery
lungs
pulmonary veins
left atrium
bicuspid valve
left ventricle
aortic valve
aorta
body (systemic circuit)
21. Right atrium: Receives deoxygenated blood from the body
22. Cardiac conduction system: A system of specialized muscle tissues that conducts electrical impulses that stimulate the heart to beat
23. Components of the cardiac conduction system: SA node, AV node, AV bundle, Av branches, and Purkinje fibers
24. SA node (Sinoatrial node): Pacemaker of the heart
25. AV node (atrioventricular node): Sends message to AV bundle
26. AV bundle: Sends messages to AV branches
27. AV branches: Sends messages to Purkinje fibers
28. Purkinje fibers: Fibers that carry stimulation throughout the ventricles causing them to contract
29. Cardiovascular disease: A general term for all diseases of the heart and blood vessels
30. Heart attack (myocardial infarction): Blood flow to the heart is completely blocked and oxygen cannot reach the cells in the region that is blocked
31. Hypertension: High blood pressure
32. Hypertension risk factors: Family history, age, gender, ethnicity, obesity, substance abuse, stress, diet, and sedentary lifestyle
33. Cardiac arrest: Sudden, unexpected stoppage of heart action, often leading to sudden cardiac death
34. Electrocardiogram: A recording of electrical activity of the heart
35. Angiogram: The radiographic visualization of blood vessels
36. Balloon angioplasty: A procedure in which a balloon attached to the end of a catheter is used to clear blockages in blood vessels
37. Right ventricle: Pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery
38. Left atrium: Receives oxygenated blood from the lungs via the pulmonary veins
39. Left ventricle: Receives oxygen-rich blood from the left atrium and pumps it into the body via the aorta
40. 4 valves of the heart: Tricuspid, pulmonary, bicuspid (mitral), and aortic
41. Where does blood travel to pick up oxygen?: The lungs
42. What valve is found between the right atrium and the right ventricle?: Tricupsid
43. What valve is found between the left atrium and left ventricle: Bicuspid (mitral)
44. What is the largest blood vessel found in the body?: Aorta
45. Natural pacemaker of the heart: SA node
