Advantages of networks

Types of networks

Disadvantages of network

Topologies

Share files

share resources

Share logins

So the same files are available whichever computer you use

Such as printers and internet connections.

so that the same username and passwords can be used on every computer on the network

LAN

WAN

Local area network

A network in a small area or single organisation

Wide area network

A network that spans a large area or multiple organisations

Cost

Increased risk

Difficulty

Networks are expensive to set up

Problems such as viruses can affect every computer on the network

Expertise is needed to set up and maintain a network

Star topology- it is connected to a central switch, the switch directs the traffic to the appropriate computer, it’s fast however expensive

Ring topology - computers are connected to each other in a ring, communication only goes in one direction, no central cable, cheap to install, high chance of failure

Bus topology- The network consists of a single cable that runs through, all devices are attached to this cable, cheap to install, high chance of catastrophic failure
