memory - created from Mind Map

Seite 1

Capacity

STM = 7+/-2

LTM = potentially unlimited

Jacobs (1887)

Strengths

Weaknesses

led to further research

findings usefully applied to real world

phone numbers, postcodes

Lab experiment - lacks mundane realism

it is possible that STM capacity is greater in everyday memory

Duration

STM = 20 seconds if no rehearsal

LTM = hours/ days/ years

Peterson and Peterson (1959)

Trigrams

Encoding

STM = acoustic mainly

LTM = semantic mainly
