➞ Countries can no longer be placed in distinct categories of development and instead are now thought of as being on a continuum of development.
➞ The development continuum accounts for the fact that countries can develop in different ways, not just how the UK, as shown by Rostow’s Model.
➞ The continuum uses HDI to rank countries on a sliding scale of development from most to least developed. It also accounts for the intermediate countries such as NIC’s/RIC’s
➞ The continuum is able to account for the complexities the Brandt line is unable to display
➞ Countries can go forward or backwards in the continuum e.g. Zimbabwe in the 1990s
➞ It also accounts for the changing roles of countries in the global economy, such as the four Asian Tigers, which were once LDC’s and have since developed into NIC’s with the help of TNC’s. Consequential cumulative causation has allowed accelerated development in these countries.
➞ As countries become increasingly developed, their role in the global economy changes, changing the global shift.
➞ This idea has replaced older ideas about development, such as LEDC’s/MEDC’s, North/South Divide etc. which suggest that countries are established in two distinct groups of development, this ideology is flawed as no country is ever at the same stage of development as another.
➞ The development continuum is a more accurate reflection of reality
➞ HDI has been critised as some countries placed in the developing world
