Goal of Interview

*record a complete health history.

*collect subjective data

*build rapport

Responses-Assisting the Narrative

*9 types of verbal responses.

-First 5...patient leads

-Last 4...you lead.

1. Facilitation...encourage the patient to say more, continue. "mm-hmm," "go on," "yes" nodding and leaning forward.

2. Silence.... is golden after open-ended questions, attentive and allowing.

3. Reflection... echoes the patient's words.

4. Empathy...recognizes feelings and puts them into words.."It must be hard."

5. Clarification... summarize, avoid misinterpretation.

6. Confrontation..clarify a discrepancy between staring points/observation.

7. Interpretation...conclusions, ascribes feelings. ALWAYS VALIDATE!

8. Explanation...Inform and share facts.

9. Summary

Intimate zone- 0-1.5 ft

Personal distance- 1.5-4 ft

Social distance- 4 to 12 ft

Public distance- 12 ft
