What is an Ecosystem?

• An ecosystem includes all of the living things (plants, animals and organisms) in a given area, interacting with each other, and also with their non-living environments (weather, earth, sun, soil, climate, atmosphere).

Food Chains

• A food chain in a unique type of diagram to show how animals eat plants and other animals eat other animals. It order in which they eat each other.

Deciduous and Non-Deciduous Trees

• Deciduous trees are trees that drop their leaves for part of the year.

Buttress Roots

• Buttress roots are large roots on all sides of a shallowly rooted tree. Typically, they are found in nutrient-poor rain forest soils and do not penetrate to deeper layers. They prevent the tree from falling over (hence the name buttress) while also gathering more nutrients.

Emergent Tree

• The tallest trees are the emergents, towering as much as 200 feet above the forest floor with trunks that measure up to 16 feet around. Most of these trees are broad-leaved, hardwood evergreens. Sunlight is plentiful up here. Animals found are eagles, monkeys, bats and butterflies. CANOPY LAYER.

Lianas

• Lianas are climbing woody vines that drape rain forest trees. They have adapted to life in the rain forest by having their roots in the ground and climbing high into the tree canopy to reach available sunlight.
