Hashing is a standalone tool and has following uses:

one-way function

weak notion of data integrity

primitives for cryptographic code

means for binding data

pseudo-random generator

has following properties:

1. two practical properties

Compute arbitrary long inputs to fixed length outputs (compression)

should be easy to compute (h(x))

2. three security properties

preimage resistance - should be hard to reverse hash function (password)

secondary preimage resistance (checksum)

collision reistance
