BIO MECHANICS

WHAT IS BIO MECHANICS?

bio mechanics is the study of motion and the effects of forces relative to the body.

•Applies the laws of mechanics and physics to human performance

–Contributes to the improvement in mechanical aspects and sports performance in following areas

•Description

•Explanation

•Prediction

•Improvement

Seite 2

Linear Motion

Takes place through linear pathway either in these ttwo

Straight line

Curved Line

Also referred to as translation

All body parts travel same speed same time.

Angular motion

When an object turns about an axis or rotation

All body parts travel through the same angle in the same direction same time

Move on these axis

Medial axis naval to lower back

Longitudinal head to toe

Horizontal

General Motion

Combination of linear and angular motion

Human movement usually consists of general motion rather then pure linear motion or angular motion

e.g. cyclist , some body parts are linear some are angular

Quantities used in linear and angular motion

Motion linear - all have equations (look them up)

Distance = path of body as moves from one location to another

Measured in terms of total distance covered e.g. 42km

Displacement = how far you finish from start point in set direction

Speed = distance/time (is an avg, doesn't tell us max and min speed)

Velocity = displacement/time taken

Acceleration = change in velocity/time

Acceleration due to gravity: naturally occurring force resulting in downward acceleration on a body at constant rate of -9.8m/s.

Uniform acceleration: When a body accelerates at a constant rate in both magnitude and direction.

Angular Motion

Vector

Angular distance

Represents the sum of all angles as a body moves from its start position to its end position

Angular displacement

Represents the difference in the angle between the start and the end position of the body.

Angular speed = Angular distance/time

Angular velocity = angular displacement/time

Angular acceleration = (Final angular velocity - initial angular velocity)/time
