COMPUTER SYSTEMS

• Computer: takes in data -> processes it -> outputs it
• Computer system consists of hardware & software
• Hardware: physical stuff -> CPU, motherboard, monitor, printer
• Software: programs/applications that computer system runs -> operating system, word processor, video game
• Many types of computer systems
• General purpose (perform many tasks -> PCs) or dedicated systems (perform one function)

Embedded Systems

• Computers built into other devices e.g. dishwashers, microwaves, TVs
• Used as control systems -> monitor & control machinery to achieve desired result
• e.g. in dishwasher embedded system could control water pumps, water release mechanisms, dishwasher cycles & thermostat
• Dedicated systems -> easier to design, cheaper to produce, more efficient

Components of a Computer

• POWER SUPPLY: supplies power to motherboard & other hardware
• CASE COOLING FAN: extracts hot air from computer case
• CPU HEAT SINK & COOLING FAN: keeps CPU at steady temperature
• CPU: under heat sink -> processes all information
• OPTICAL DRIVE: reads/writes optical disks
• HARD DISK DRIVE: internal secondary storage
• MOTHERBOARD: main circuit board, where all hardware is connected
