• Heart must have adequate CO to pump O2 to brain etc
• 2.Contractility is affected by MI, CCF, Pulmonary embolus
• Preload refers to venous return and is affected by bleeding, shock
• Afterload is associated with systemic vascular resistance eg in CCF
• Drugs affecting contractility, preload, afterload are adrenergic drugs Epinephrine, NE, Dobutamine, Dopamine, Vasopressin
• Vasopressin does not have direct effect on the heart but useful in acute pulmonary resuscitation
• Dobutamine not used much in acute cardiopulmonary arrest case, useful to improve CO and in CCF
• These adrenergic drugs act on beta and alpha receptors in smooth muscle of bv and heart
