Outbreak A sudden start of a disease, or rapid worsening of a disease Sentence: Recently, there has been an outbreak of measles in the US.
Epidemic a widespread occurrence of an infectious disease in a community at a particular time Sentence: The US is experiencing an epidemic of the flu, thousands of people are ill.
Contagoious a disease spread from one person or organism to another by direct or indirect contact
Chronic an illness persisting for a long time or constantly recurring Sentence: Tom has been coughing for months; he has chronic bronchitis.
Acute a disease that it is of short duration Sentence: The common cold is an acute illness.
Vaccination A medication meant to produce immunity against a disease
Communicable able to be transmitted/passed from one sufferer to another Example: A cold or the flu is communicable.
Non-communicable a disease that is not transmissible directly from one person to another. Example: Diabetes is a non-communicable disease.
Allergen a normally benign (harmless) substance that causes an abnormal reaction to people who are allergic. Example: In the spring, pollens are a common allergen.
Congenital Disorder a medical condition that is present at or before birth Example: The baby was born with a congenital heart condition that was not discovered until birth.
Environmental Toxin harmful chemicals found in air, water, food, or ground Example: I discovered my walls were painted with lead paint which is an environmental toxin
Disease Vector organisms s that can carry pathogens from person to person and place to place Examples: Mosquitos, ticks, rats
Virus a microscopic infectious agent that replicates only within the cells of living hosts, mainly bacteria, plants, and animals. Example: The common cold is caused by a virus.
Pathogen any disease producing agent Example: virus, bacteria
Germ a microorganism which causes disease
Carcinogen a substance capable of causing cancer in living tissue
Mold a growth of fungi forming on vegetable or animal matter
Asthma A condition in which a person's airways become inflamed, narrow and swell, and produce extra mucus, which makes it difficult to breathe; can be caused by allergies or poor air quality
Influenza a highly contagious viral infection often occurring in epidemics; flu
Tuberculosis an infectious bacterial disease of the lungs
Fever a temporary increase in average body temperature of 98.6°F
Cancer abnormal cells divide uncontrollably and destroy body tissue
Rash an area of irritated or swollen skin

Ratio An expression of the relative size of two numbers by showing one divided by the other. Example: 2:1
