Question Answer
Counterexample A specific example that shows a statement is false
Inductive reasoning Reasoning that uses a number of specific examples to arrive at a plausible generalization or prediction
Conjecture An educated guess based on known information
Conjunction A compound statement formed by joining two or more statements with the word AND
Disjunction A compound statement formed by joining two or more statements with the word OR
Law of detachment If p->q is a true conditional and p is true then q is true
Law of syllogism If p->q and q->r are true conditionals the p->r is also true
Reflexive P.O.E a=a
Symmetric P.O.E If a=b, then b=a
Transitive P.O.E If a=b and b-c, then a=c
Addition P.O.E If a=b, then a+c=b+c
Subtraction P.O.E If a=b, then a-c=b-c
Multiplication P.O.E If a=b, then ac=bc
Division P.O.E If a=b and c=/0, then a/c=b/c
Communitive Property of Addition/Multiplication a+b=b+a; ab=ba
Associative Property of Addition/Multiplication (a+b)+c=a+(b+c); (ab)c=a(bc)
Additive Indentity a+0=0+a=a
Multiplicative Identity ax1=1xa=a
Additive Inverse a+(-a)=0
Multiplicative Inverse ax1/a=1, when a=/ 0
Multiplicative Property of Zero ax0=0xa=0
Distributive Property of Equality a(b+c)=ab+ac; (a+b)c=ac+ab
Substitution Property of Equality If a=b, then a may be replaced by b
Congruent Angles Angles are congruent iff the angles have equal measures
Supplementary Angles Two angles whose measures have a sum of 180
Complementary Angles Two angles whose measures have a sum of 90
Vertical Angles Two non-adjacent angles formed by two intersecting lines
Linear Pairs Adjacent angles whose nonshared sides form opposite rays
Slope Intercept form y=mx+b
Standard form Ax+By=C
Point-Slope Form y-y1= m(x-x1)
Parallel Postulate Two non-vertical lines are parallel iff they have the same slope
Perpendicular Postulate Two non-vertical lines are perpendicular iff the product of their slope is -1(their slopes are opposite recipricals)
