  1. The Alkali Metals - Group 1
    1. Very Reactive
      1. Easy to cut/soft
        1. Low density (Lithium, sodium and potassium float on water)
          1. Low melting/boiling points
            1. Good conductors of heat/electricity
              1. Shiny when freshly cut
                1. Reactivity increases down the group
                2. Group 7 - the Halogens
                  1. Reactivity decreases down the group
                    1. Group 7 need 1 electron to be stable. More shells --> attraction decreases. Nucleus = positive charge; electrons negative charge.
                    2. poor conductors of energy + electricity
                      1. Low melting + boiling points
                        1. Can use a more reactive halogen to displace a less reactive halogen
                          1. Can take part in both covalent and ionic bonding

                                                      1. Doesn't react with water
                                                        1. Uses: Water pipes, electric cables
                                                        2. Titanium
                                                          1. Very light weight
                                                            1. Has an oxide layer on its surface; stops water + air getting to the metal --> resists corrosion
                                                              1. Expensive; has to be extracted from its ore; large amount of energy
                                                                1. Withstands high temps.
                                                                  1. Uses: Artificial hip joint, pipes in nuclear power stations, racing bikes
                                                                2. The transition Metals
                                                                  1. Good conductors of electricity and energy
                                                                    1. Hard + Strong
                                                                      1. High densities
                                                                        1. High melting points
                                                                          1. Much less reactive than metals in group 1
                                                                            1. Do not react easily with oxygen or water as alkali metals do
                                                                              1. If they corrode, it is very slowly
                                                                                1. useful as building materials
                                                                              2. Many form coloured compounds (copper sulphate - blue)
                                                                                1. Can form more than 1 ion. Fe^2+ and Fe^3+
                                                                                  1. compounds of these ions are different colours
                                                                                  2. Malleable (can be moulded into shapes)
