Biases/Pitfalls
  1. experimental design
    1. 1 research topic: must be funded, well-regarded by employers/colleagues
      1. 2. research q: may be based on stereotypes, neglect effects of enviro (social/societal demands) or bio fators
        1. ex: glass ceiling focus rather than glass escalator in achievement studies
        2. 3. operational definition: how variable identified/quantified, must be op. defined before used in a study
          1. 4. population sample: Midwest vs impoverished vs college: may be misleading or comparison group inaccurate
            1. sex of experimenter effect: result produced by gender of researcher, male-female diff. may be diff with regards to gender of researcher
            2. protocol
              1. context must remain same (male/female confederate acting on male/female subjects)
                1. ecological validity: how much does it resemble a real-life scenario
                  1. instrument used: do items cover all potential responses, can they rule out competing hypotheses
                    1. analysis: tech used appropriate for prob. at hand
                      1. interpretation of results: are differences meaningful?
                        1. have they carefully chosen a comparison group? (ex: fired men to non-fired men)
                          1. are they bio/socially based?
                            1. lifestyle or non lifestyle?
                            2. comments of reviewers
                              1. alpha bias: differences more interesting than none, no diff. found often not published, leads to file drawer problem
                                1. editorial boards often white men
                                  1. or even the way media reports findings, 'mozart effect'
                              2. need to be aware that gender interacts with race/class
                                1. poor women of color often not included in studies
                                  1. also they differ on definitions
                                  2. labels: promiscous vs. experimental, overgeneralizations
                                    1. ethnocentricism: to apply one's norms to other cultures
                                      1. anthropomorphism: animal behavior=human behavior: duck 'rape': how to det. unwilling
                                        1. same note: don't use bio explanation to explain gaps in knowledge
