For all fractions, the bottom number (denominator) tells you how many equal parts make up the whole. The top number, (numerator) tells you how many of these parts are of interest (shaded, colored, or white).
The rectangle in one-fifth (1/5) shaded because there are five equal-sized parts in the whole and one of them is shaded.
